Dear Sirs,

I have today received your favour of the 7th inst., and note contents of same as well as of the letter received by you from the F.O. with information about the seizure of the three cases numbers: 32, 33, & 35 of the above shipment.

As the destination of the goods was, however, not Hongkong but Amoy, according to Bill of Lading, I dispute the right of the Hongkong Government to examine the Cases and I hereby protest against the seizure of these goods. Please inform the Shipping Company of this, and ask them what can be done in the matter. They will, perhaps, be able to advise you, if they cannot through their Hongkong Superintendent do anything in the matter.

In answer to your request of an explanation, I beg to inform you that I am doing a regular business in different sundries with my client in question, and had at the time a contract for regular shipments of umbrellas, in monthly instalments. In the month of June I received a purchase order from him for a quantity of Opium which I bought for him according to a sample received and at a price limited by him. I also received a small order for Morphia Powder at the same time. Later on I received his instructions to pack and ship these goods together with the next shipment of umbrellas.

Re shipment of 5 Cases per s.s. "Hammonia".
